Legal Requirements
There are certain legal requirements that have to be completed, I can guide you through this process.
- A Notice of Intended Marriage form (NOIM) must be filled out and lodged with me at least 1 calendar month before the wedding, this form is valid up to 18 months.
- If born in Australia an original birth certificate or Extract must be provided. As of 1 July 2014 a Australian Passport will also be acceptable. A photo ID is also required.
- For those born overseas a foreign passport is acceptable if a birth certificate cannot be provided, but a birth certificate is always preferable. If born overseas and birth certificates are unavailable a Statutory declaration executed under the Statutory Declarations Act 1959 would be exceptable. Any documents in a language other than English must be translated by a certified Interpreter along with a Interpreter Statutory Declaration.
- If there has been a previous marriage, you will be required to produce the original documentation of proof that you are divorced and in the event of death the same applies with an original death certificate. These documents must be shown to your celebrant before the wedding can take place.
- If for some reason you have changed your name, you will be required to supply the relevant documentation. It is best to produce the relevant documents at the time of completing the NOIM. To view the Code of Conduct for Civil Celebrants, click here
